Gerry Mastrianni
1967-2008
Founder, Trading for a Cure & Managing Director of Trading at StockCross Global

Early in his career, Gerry Mastrianni was a young trader when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease, a form of lymphoma. He began treatment at the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute (FHCI) where he later received a life-saving bone marrow transplant in 2001. Gerry was a two-time survivor, and up to the time of his death, he was the Managing Director of Trading at StockCross Global in Lake Mary, FL.

During his treatment at FHCI, Gerry was troubled by the plights of the children around him who were receiving the same painful treatment he was receiving. “If there were ever two words that shouldn’t be in the same sentence, they are pediatrics and oncology,” Gerry said. He realized then that despite it all, he didn’t have it so bad, and he vowed to do whatever he could to help make life seem a little brighter for the children he saw suffering. He established Trading for a Cure, a one-day annual event during which trading profits are donated to FHCI’s Pediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Units.

Trading for a Cure has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to date. In 2006, Gerry helped to raise a quarter of a million dollars and since its inception in 2003 has been able to fund a playroom for the children treated by FHCI each year, of which there are over 300. In addition, thanks to Trading for a Cure, FHCI was able to purchase a machine that helps doctors to diagnose a patient’s illness in half the time previous technology allowed.

Gerry had taken his illness and used it as an inspiration to help others, and in the process has brought the people of the financial community together to offer their support. “The greatest part of this is that it allows Wall Street to participate,” said Gerry of the one-day fundraiser. “Wall Street’s image of being cold-hearted is really ripped apart on that day.”

Gerry lived in Lake Mary, Florida with his wife Lisa and six year-old daughter Sophia.
